What is ๐๐ž๐œ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ณ๐ž๐ ๐ฌ๐จ๐œ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐ง๐ž๐ญ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค service?

The diagram below shows a comparison between Twitter and Mastodon.

It is said that Trump's new social media platform Truth Social was using the Mastodon.

Mastodon runs ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฅ๐Ÿ-๐ก๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ services. It is free and ๐ก๐š๐ฌ ๐ง๐จ ๐š๐๐ฌ.

Unlike Twitter, whose servers belong to the Twitter company, Mastodonโ€™s servers do not belong to any company. Its network is composed of servers (instances) from different organizations.

When users register, they must choose a server to start with. Since the servers sync up, users can still receive updates from other servers.

Because the network is run by volunteers, the company has ๐จ๐ง๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐จ๐ง๐ž ๐ž๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฒ๐ž๐ž - its founder Eugen Rochko. It is run by ๐œ๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐  and is now supported by 3500 people.

Over to you: Decentralized social networks can be controversial. What do you think the future of network networks will be?
